Dear Friends and Colleagues within/without the Theatrical Community all over the World,
We would like to express our strongest support for the message sent from the Russia Section to Ukraine Section regarding the current Russian military invasion of Ukraine.
First of all, we admire the courage and initiatives of our colleagues in Russia who raise their voices in the no doubt difficult circumstances, and add our own voices of compassion and sympathy towards our colleagues in Ukraine, praying for their safety.
As the history manifestly has shown, war does not produce anything but death and destruction and is totally against the humanity’s shared values, such as love of peace, respect for others, and compassion towards the vulnerable.
If we look at the history of institutionalized theatre for the past 2500 years, we can confidently say that theatre may not be as instantly powerful as politicians, economists or military personnel, but it is not at all powerless. As Sophocles’ protagonist Antigone exemplifies, theatre has taught us the most important lessons for the humanity to learn, that is to say, there is a rule to be followed universally, a rule dictated by heaven.
We appeal to the Russian soldiers to stop being a part of unprovoked military aggressions which do not produce any glory or victory, only resulting in an unending cycle of violence.
Finally, we would urge our friends and colleagues all over the world to unite and offer support for the suffering Ukrainians in whatever means possible, in order to end this horrific turn of events.

演劇を愛する世界の友人たちへ、
私たち日本の演劇人は、このたびのロシア軍によるウクライナ侵攻に際して、ロシアセンターからウクライナセンターへと送られたメッセージに満腔の賛意を表させていただきます。
まず第一に、困難な状況のなかで声を上げていただいたロシアの同僚の皆さまの勇気と率先した行動に敬意を表し、ウクライナの同僚の皆さまの現状に思いを寄せて、その安全を心より祈念申し上げます。
歴史が示すとおり、戦争は死と破壊以外の何ももたらしません。それは、平和を愛する心、他者への敬意、弱きものへの共感共苦といった、人間が共有する価値観とは全く相いれないものです。
過去2500年間の演劇の歴史を見れば明らかなように、演劇は政治家や経済人、軍人ほど即座に権力を行使することはありませんが、まったくもって無力であるとは言えません。ソフォクレスの主人公アンティゴネがそうであるように、演劇は私たち人間にとって最も重要な教えを授けてくれています。すなわち、人には普遍的に従うべき規則というものがあり、それは天が定めた規則だということです。
ロシアの軍人たちに訴えます、正当な理由のない軍事攻撃に加担することをやめてください。それは何の栄光も勝利ももたらさず、ただ暴力の連鎖をもたらすだけだからです。
最後に世界中の友人と同僚の皆さんとともに、この戦争で苦しんでいるウクライナの人びとをどんな形であれ支援し、この恐るべき出来事を終わらせるために団結いたしましょう。
